Gauhar Jaan was a singer and dancer in the old courtesan tradition from Calcutta and is acknowledged as India’s first ever recording artist. It was in 1902 that she became one of the first Indian musicians to record their performance on a gramophone record (for a princely sum of Rs 3,000 – no small amount in those days).
